Thanks to the constant improvement of communication technology, people who are not physically present in the same location are able to exchange information and emotion conveniently. However, as an increasing number of troubles or even crimes caused by modern communication technology have emerged, people have gradually realized it is actually a double-edged-sword and not all people can benefit from it.

Admittedly, modern communication tools to a large extent make it more convenient for people to get in touch. With the help of telephones and computer-based technologies, people standing in different places can talk to each other or send messages. The invention of video chat connects people more closely by allowing people to see each other’s face. In addition, the powerful functions of social medias, attracting especially youngsters, enable people to communicate with even more friends by updating status and uploading pictures.

However, while some people appreciate the benefits brought by modern communication technology, others suffer the pains. Obviously, the convenience of keeping in touch facilitated by modern communication technology has invaded people’s private life. On weekends or vacations, people may receive emails sent by colleagues and calls from clients. The emergent issues they communicate may ruin people’s holiday or even urge people to buy a ticket and go back to work the next day. Even worse, some criminals boasting excellent computer skills steal people’s private information from websites they register, eavesdrop others’ calls, and monitor others’ phones. All these illegal activities generate many troubles to modern society.

To sum up, it is true that the advancement of modern communication technology has bring many benefits to modern citizens, but there are also many people who cannot benefit and suffer the pains.

Some people think people have benefited from modern communication technology, while others think some people have not benefited at all. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some people think government money spent on supporting artists would be better than supporting other important things.

范文:

One of the most important services of modern government is to aggregate funds for common needs. Given the large population of different interest groups, it is almost impossible for a government to satisfy every single individual. Therefore, the government ought to be prudent while making budget plan. In my mind, to support artists is a waste of money which should be allocated to other more important fields.

Admittedly, artists need financial supports to develop career and explore artistic talents, especially at the very beginning. To be an artist, one has to invest a lot in tools and materials, like musicians’ instrument, painters’ pigments, photographers’ camera. Aside from large expenditures, another challenge is to become known by the public and hence attract potential buyers. Thus, without government support, artists failing to cope with these two obstacles may end up in misery or give up at early stage. On the contrary, government’s investments in arts, such as holding exhibitions and building galleries, help people with talents to give full play to their strength and contribute to culture development.

However, we cannot overlook the fact that the money collected from taxpayers is limited and therefore should be spent discreetly in the way that benefits as more people as possible. Actually, only a small group of people who are interested in arts visit exhibition and art gallery on a frequent basis. Most people would opt for other more secular entertainments. On the other hand, there are many aspects that are related to almost all people’s life and hence deserve more attention from the government. For instance, numerous children born in poverty stricken areas desire for better education; the spreading environmental pollution threatening people’s health and safety should be addressed timely; people are waiting for the improvement of the currently ineffective health care system.

To sum up, in consideration to the limitation of tax that a government is able to levy from society, the money should not be wasted on supporting artists but be spent on other more essential programs.

Centuries ago, to become educated was a privilege of children from noble and wealthy families. But today, thanks to the implementation of compulsory education, every child is endowed with the right to go to school. Therefore, modern education plays a more important role in promoting social progress by both preparing useful members for society and helping individuals realize their dreams.

On the one hand, schools and universities, especially those funded by governments, are responsible for the cultivation of talents needed by society. Teachers equip students with necessary knowledge that allows them to survive in the job market. Leaving schools, students earn a living by contributing their strength and wisdom. For the development of any industry, it requires large number of people with intelligence and skills. Moreover, another equally important function of schools is character education. Apart from academic knowledge, teachers help students nurture sense of responsibility, become men of integrity, learn the importance of teamwork, etc. all traits essential for them to be useful members of society.

On the other hand, for students with strong desire and determination, education enables them to grasp necessary knowledge and skills to approach success. In modern society, there is constant demand for talents with strong academic strength. Many types of jobs require candidates to have outstanding education background which demonstrates their study ability and attitude. Only with cutting-edged knowledge and adept skills can people be competent and competitive in a position. Therefore, students work hard to enroll universities with high rankings and obtain excellent academic performance.

To sum up, the purpose of modern education is twofold: to cultivate talents for society and to help individuals attain personal ambition.

Some people say that government should spend money on measures to save languages that are used by few speakers, while others believe that it is a waste of financial resources. Discuss both these views and your own opinion.

范文:

Thanks to the irreversible trend of globalization, people today living in different areas around the world have the same access to information and commodities. As a few languages spoken by most population become dominant globally, such as English, French and Chinese, some languages of minorities are on the edge of extinction. It is time for governments to take effective measures to protect languages at risk.

Admittedly, the investment in protecting a dying language is usually quite high and cannot yield immediate profits. It is difficult for governments with inadequate budgets to allocate enough money to support universities to recruit teachers and provide curriculums. Even worse, the government also has to spend much money on advertising and encouraging students who otherwise would rather learn a language spoken by most people. Moreover, it seems the extinction of a language spoken by a tiny group of population will not exert much effect on communication if those people are able to acquire other more popular and practical languages.

However, to save a language at risk means to save a culture and we can never over emphasize the significance of culture diversity. For any culture that exists in the world, it contains much valuable wisdom and life philosophy that we cannot afford to lose. To better understand a culture, we need to master its language. In addition, when those popular cultures become so dominant and powerful that they tend to colonize every inch of the world, it is even more vital to preserve cultures of minorities and resist assimilation. It is because that the uniqueness of a culture brings more possibilities. People growing up in different culture demonstrate divergent characteristics and contribute various ideas. It is more fun to live in a world with divergent cultures.

To sum up, though the financial costs of protecting a dying language is usually huge, the benefits of protecting languages of minorities and hence conserving culture diversity will finally justify the costs.

A lot of high school students now cheat in homework assignments, by asking other students for answers. Which of the following do you think is the most efficient way to stop?

-asking parents to help stop the students from cheating

-penalty or punishment to the students

-asking teacher to create homework assignment that cannot be easily cheated.

范文:

Thanks to the easy access to Internet, children today have more education resources. By simply typing in keywords, they are able to search for knowledge quickly online. However, Internet also makes it easier for them to cheat in homework. With the help of various chatting software, they even can share what they have acquired. To discourage children from cheating, teachers have three solutions in mind, including parents’ supervision, strict punishment and assignments that are difficult for students to cheat. In my opinion, the second one is the best of all.

To begin with, having severe punishment in place is the only solution that makes students consciously avoid cheating by themselves. It is important for students to realize how perilous to form the habit of cheating. Teachers fail to know students’ true academic performance, and students who find with fewer efforts they can also achieve a satisfied score will gradually refuse to work hard in both study and future career. The strict penalty reminds students the danger, warns them to actively regulate behaviors and stresses the significance of honesty and integrity. It is not worthy to take such a risk to deceive teachers. For example, when a student is found dishonest in an assignment, the professor should directly fail him in the subject and urge him to take it again the next year. A long term purpose of setting strict penalty is to educate students that whether there is supervision or not someday in future, they know that cheating is not the option.

Secondly, it is difficult either for all parents to effectively supervise children’s homework or for teachers of all subjects to design homework that is impossible to cheat. Sometimes, parents are busy with work both in office and at home. There is not enough time left for them to check children’s homework page by page. It is also unfeasible for parents to sit by side with children who will feel uneasy and even upset. Or simply, some parents may feel embarrassing when they find that the subject their children are working on is beyond their knowledge to comprehend. Then, from the perspective of teachers, homework of different subjects take different forms. For literature teachers, it is easy to prevent students from cheating by assigning essay writing as homework. However, not all teachers are that lucky. For teachers teaching maths, physics and chemistry, most assignments they give to students are questions that require students to use formula to do calculation and there is just one correct answer. This kind of exercises are essential for students to grasp knowledge they acquire in class. Therefore, teachers of those subjects can hardly inhibit students from cheating by changing homework.

In summary, to cope with the increasing number of students who cheat in homework, schools need to impose severe penalty on those who dare to cross the line. This is the most effective method to teach students to willingly regulate behaviors by themselves.

Urban design is a popular major in many universities, and students graduating from this major work with governments, institutions or companies to help improve people’s life in cities by locating buildings of different functions in the right place. In my mind, it is more advantageous to locate buildings of same functions together and separate from those of different functions.

Admittedly, the design of mixing residential buildings, office buildings, schools and shops together saves people time of traffic. It is convenient for students to go to school which is within walking distance. Also, adults can spare more time in the morning to enjoy healthy breakfast and in the evening to prepare delicious food for the whole family. Even better, there should be shops offering various commodities supporting people’s daily life and a cinema or a theater that local residents can visit after work or in weekends to watch the latest movie.

However, the above mentioned ideal design of building location can only be seen in a few tiny cities with small population. In metropolitan cities, such layout can only bring troubles. The reason is simple that residents opt for a school or company not just because of the distance that is away from home, but mainly because of what they desire to achieve from the the education or career. It is impossible for a community to have schools and companies that can satisfy all parents and children living here. Consequently, people still have to drive during rush hours.

On the contrary, if buildings of same function gather together, city life can be more convenient and comfortable. Usually, as the shopping mall attracts numerous consumers and generates much traffic, it is not supposed to be located near neighborhood where ought to be quiet. Moreover, the set up of a business district facilitates the communication between companies. It is convenient for companies to meet business partners, banks and even consultants. All these just require appropriate management of transportation, like shuttle bus.

To sum up, city planners ought to design the layout of buildings according to different roles and functions. The advantages of gathering offices, schools, homes and shops together and separating from each other far outweigh the disadvantages.

In many cities, planners have located schools, homes, shops and offices in specific areas, which are widely separated from each other. Do the advantages of this policy outweigh the disadvantages to the city residents.

An increasing number of people change their career and place of residence several times during their lives. Is it a positive or negative development?

范文:

London Heathrow International Airport, the busiest one in Europe, witnesses large numbers of people coming or leaving everyday. The reason why people change careers and places to live so frequently today varies from person to person. Generally speaking, the huge and rapid movement of population, a symbol of modern society, is a sign of progress.

To begin with, the remove of geographic boundaries in job market globally guarantees that the right person can be chosen for the right position at the right price, which leads to a more prosperous and progressive world for everyone. Obviously, thanks to the discrepancy of economic development and industry division, there are divergent needs for talents in different parts of the world and at different time. Individuals, who hunt for jobs in global market, are able to make a change and find a position that can better satisfy their needs for money, promotion or self-improvement. For companies, when they fail to recruit in local talent pool, either for candidates’ incompetence or unreasonable demands for salaries, it is more efficient to search globally.

Secondly, the large and frequent movement of population means the thriving of real estate market, the pillar industry in almost every country. Moving to a new place, people either rent a house for a short stay or buy one for a long stay or for investment. With more people changing jobs and locations of residence, there will be more housing transactions, which generate more taxes to the government and job opportunities. For example, near almost every neighborhood in Beijing, there are a couple of letting agencies whose salesman are always busy with showing clients houses in surrounding area.

To sum up, modern people’s frequent change of career and houses is generally a positive social change.

In the past a few decades, many countries have experienced the rapid progress of urbanization. Though the expansion of cities bring many benefits to people, we cannot overlook the accompanying problems, especially those confronting youngsters.

To begin with, the flooding of a growing number of young people makes cities increasingly crowded and stressful. It is a pity that when the development of infrastructure fails to satisfy the needs of growing population, here comes the fierce competition of resources, including houses, hospitals and schools. Undoubtedly, the recent arrivals, namely youngsters, who are at the early stage of career building or job hunting, will be under mounting pressure. For some, it is even unaffordable to catch cold and stay at home for a couple of days, due to the expensive fees of seeing a doctor and the cut of bonus by the company.

Secondly, the large population also means the ferocious competition in job market. Undoubtedly, there are more job opportunities in cities, the location of various companies of different industries and scales. However, except for the lucky period of fast economic development, the supply of positions usually cannot meet the swift growing demands. Consequently, numerous youngsters driven by ambition and desire for a higher living standards will be disappointed. They have to either choose a less satisfying offer or endure the pressure of being jobless. The competition continues after one is successfully recruited. Surrounded by outstanding colleagues, young people need to strive for excellence in case that they have no chance of promotion or even be marginalized and then replaced soon.

To cope with problems mentioned above, young people have two solutions: departure or self improvement. The one with stronger background and better experience stands more chances to achieve success in career and hence has more incomes. From the perspective of governments, measures can be taken to develop cities of small or medium size, so as to retain youngsters with job opportunities in their hometown and alleviate the pressure of big cities. In a word, governments need to address the fundamental cause of problem: population explosion.

Some people think young people are not suitable for important positions in the government, while other people think it is a good idea for young people to take on these positions. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

范文:

A government whose most important service is to aggregate funds for common good should consist of officials with many valuable traits, including sense of responsibility, intelligence, integrity, etc. In my view, young people are qualified to work for the government but not eligible to take on important positions.

Admittedly, the government needs creative thoughts from young minds. As the world is changing rapidly due to the advancement of science and progress of society, the government has to timely reexamine whether their present policies are adaptable for current situation and adjust accordingly. However, it is usually challenging for people older than forty to make a change and learn new things, which is exactly what young people are good at. Thus, for a government to be full of vitality and vigor, it needs young people to contribute their new ideas and drive for constant changes.

However, to work in decisive positions of a government requires more qualities that young people may not possess. Any decision made by the government will exert huge impact on its country or even the whole world for decades, which necessitate the decision maker’s experience, insight and foresight. Youngsters, on the contrary, not only lack those qualities but also usually act on impulse. Failing to give full consideration to details and possible consequences, youngsters may cause troubles soon or later. Their weakness clearly shows that they need time to accumulate experiences and become qualified.

In summary, although young people’s creativity and vitality is highly appreciated, they are not ready for important positions in the government.

Nowadays people can live and work wherever they want because of the development of communication technology and transport. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

范文:

In modern society, people do not need to live near the place where they live, as they can work through various communication tools and travel with convenient transport. Though with a few minor drawbacks, the free option of where to live and work realized by advancement of communication and transportation has brought many benefits.

Admittedly, we cannot overlook the potential problems associated with the freedom of choosing where to live. Nowadays, many people would like to live in suburban areas or satellite cities and drive to their office in the downtown in exchange of the peaceful environment and low housing price. However, with a growing number of people taking this option, it is more likely for the city to suffer from traffic congestion, high energy consumption and air pollution. In addition, for employees who work at home through Internet, the lack of face-to-face communication may cause poor cooperation and low commitment.

However, all these problems can be avoided or solved and people benefit a lot from the free option of where to live and work. By working at home through Internet, people have more time flexibility. There is plenty of time for them to take good care of family members, like preparing nutritious breakfast and playing games with young children. It also saves people’s time wasted on daily commute between home and office. Moreover, the convenient transportation makes it possible for people to change their career and place of residence several times during their life. This kind of lifestyle satisfies people’s curiosity of the world and enables them to constantly enrich experience.

To sum up, there are minor disadvantages for people to freely opt for where to live and work, but the advantages are in general far more obvious.

The graph shows (relates) the percentage of radio and television audiences over 4 years old in the UK (the UK population over 4 years old who tuned in to radio and television) throughout the day from October to December 1992. The figure reveals that before 2:00 pm there were more radio audiences, while after 2:00 pm more people turned to television. There was a gap of 10% between radio and television audiences.

The data indicates that radio listeners increased (grow, rise, go up) substantially before 8:00 am, when the percentage reached (amounted to) to a peak of 27%.

The percentage then declined steadily to 11% at 4:00 pm, which was followed by a slight increase to 15% at 5:00 pm.

However, from then on, there was again a gradual decrease to 2% until 4:00 am, when the percentage bottomed out. The period from 4:00 am to 6:00 am saw another slight rise to 4% in radio listeners.

As for (similarly) TV viewers, the percentage went up from 6:00 am to 8:30 am, when there was a leveling off at 8% until 10:00 am (for the next one hour and a half)

After a slight decrease, the percentage rose sharply to 15% between 12 pm and 2 pm, before it dropped slightly.

The peak (45%) was reached at 8:00 pm after a massive rise from 14% since 3:00 pm.

However, the period between 8:00 pm and 3:00 am saw a slump in television viewers. The percentage reached the bottom of 3% at 3:00 am, when there was a slight rise afterwards.

The general trend was that the percentage of both radio and television audiences rose first and then decrease, while the total number of the latter was bigger than the former. In addition, the prime time for radio and television was 8 am and 8 pm, respectively.

The charts illustrate the proportions of both males and females being arrested and the related reasons for these arrests.

As can be seen from the two pie chart, males account for a much higher rate in terms of the total arrests being made, While females show a higher proportion than males with arrests for public drinking, assault, and some unknown reasons, males get arrested more often than females in other respects.

As far as public drinking is concerned, the rate of arrests with women is 6% higher than that with men which is 31% versus 37%. A similar situation goes to assault and the “no answer” category which is 18% vs. 16% and 7% vs. 4% respectively.

Otherwise, men reveal an unexceptional higher proportion than women and among these, men who got arrested for drunken driving, breach of order and theft all compare strongly with women.

In summary, men show a much higher arrest rate than women as a whole, but in certain respects, women also reveal some unexpected higher arrest proportions.

The bar chart compares the proportion of employees of both genders employed in executive positions in ACNE Oil Company within a one-year period between July 1993 and June 1994.

As can be seen from the chart, the percentage of male employees generally increased with the rise of the job categories from Grade E to Grade A while the opposite was true with that of women.

Grade A, which was reported as the highest position, was a male dominated one in which only one-tenth of the staff were female while male employees accounted for the rest.

When it comes to Grade B and C, men also took up over half of the employees, accounting for 80% and 60%, which are 50% and 10% higher than that of women respectively.

However, the situation in the other two jobs categories, which were relatively lower in rank, was totally reversed, with women taking up relatively larger proportion. Men constituted roughly 40% in Grade D, 20% less than that if women and most of the working staff in Grade E were women (over 70%) , twice the percentage of men.

To sum up, on the rank ladder of ACME Oil Company, male employees took up a higher and higher proportion than the weaker sex as it gradually went up to the peak -------- Grade A.

Over the past decades, people have experienced striking improvement of living standards due to rapid social and economic progress. One of the symbols of such improvement is the availability of various household goods affordable to most families. With more choices on household commodities, people today are able to enjoy a better life.

To begin with, different kinds of household appliances with powerful functions have not only freed people from burdensome housework, but also offered more options on entertainments. From the very beginning of a day to bed time, people are so accustomed to services of a variety of household products that they can hardly imagine the life without them. Life is greatly simplified, with washing machines getting clothes clean, vacuum cleaners getting floors dust free, microwave ovens getting foods ready within minutes, etc. Moreover, with those appliances having housework done, people can spare more time to have fun. After work or at weekends, people’s time for entertainment is also filled with various kinds of electronic devices, like computers, mobile phones, and tablets.

Admittedly, when there are too many choices on household goods, people may feel overwhelmed and waste money on something actually unnecessary. Sometimes, people, especially those usually busy with work or study, are reluctant to visit appliance stores, as they know how difficult and time consuming it is to make a choice among products of different brands with slight differences in functions and performance. Or sometimes, attracted by advertisements or persuaded by friends, people make unreasonable purchases. For example, if a person who usually leaves home early in the morning and works overtime at weekends is persuaded to buy a coffee maker, he will soon find he has no time to use it at all.

Therefore, the superabundant options on household commodities present people with a challenge: how to be reasonable consumers. While enjoying benefits brought by variety of household goods, people need to learn make right options on purchase.

Nowadays, people have more options on household goods. Is it a positive or negative trends?
