Passage 3
If you live in the United States, the law says you can't have a full-time job until you are 16 years old. At 14 or 15, you can work part-time after school or on weekends, and during summer you can work 40 hours each week. Does all that mean that if you are younger than 14, you can't earn(赚) your own money? Of course not! Kids who are between the ages of 10 and 13 can earn money by doing lots of things.
Valerie, 11, told us that she made money by cleaning up other people's yards. Lena, 13, makes money by knitting(织) dog sweaters and selling them to her neighbors, and Reisa said she had started taking art classes and showing her work to people. People have asked her to draw pictures for them and they pay her for them. Jasmine, 13, writes articles for different magazines!
Earning is learning. By working to earn your own money, you are learning the skills you will need to succeed in life. These skills can include things like getting along with others, using technology(技术) and using your time. Some people think that asking for money is a lot easier than earning it; however, when you make your own money, you don't have to depend on someone else. The five dollars that you earn will probably make you feel a lot better in your hand than the twenty dollars you ask for.
1.Kids can have full-time jobs at the age of ________ in the USA.

Most kids suffer from the common cold up to 10 times a year.Right now, there is no known cure for sniffles, sneezes, and coughs. But help could be on the way.Scientists recently announced they have made some progress in finding a cure for the common
cold. The rhinovirus (rhino is Greek for “nose”) causes more than 50 percent of most colds.A team of researchers from around the United States has decoded (解码) the 99 known strains,or types,of rhinovirus.
It turns out the virus that causes a simple cold is much more complicated than researchers once thought.Scientists have determined that you can have two separate strains of rhinovirus at the same time. Those strains can work together. The viruses can move their genetic material slowly inside your body. And if that happens,a whole new strain of virus gets created.
The rhinovirus’s ability to change like that makes one person’s cold different from another person’s.Therefore,it’s very difficult to develop an effective vaccine (疫苗) to fight it.But this new research does open the door for developing more effective ways to treat colds once a person has one.“We may have to have four or five drugs, and you’d need a test at your doctor’s office to know which drug will work.We are now quite certain that a very effective treatment for the common cold is at hand,” said Dr. Stephen
B.Liggett,an author of the rhinovirus study.
Liggett also hopes that finding a way to fight rhinovirus will help people who suffer from asthma (哮喘).Common colds set off more than 50 percent of asthma attacks. So if colds can be cut short, then a major cause of asthma attacks is gone too.
But don’t put away the chicken soup just yet. There’s still lots of testing and development to be done before any of these cold “cures” can be available to the public.Drug development and government approval can take many years. So,for now, just keep washing your hands and get plenty of rest.Doctors say that’s the best way to stay away from the sniffles.
1.The third paragraph is mainly about ________.
A.how the coldcauser works and how it is created
B.how scientists devote their efforts to the cold research
C.what remains to be done in dealing with the common cold
D.why children suffer from the common cold so often
2.Why is it difficult to develop an effective vaccine to fight the common cold?
A.Because medical technology isn’t advanced enough.
B.Because no two colds are caused by exactly the same strain of virus.
C.Because it’s not worth developing a vaccine for the common cold.
D.Because many drugs for the common cold have already been invented.
3.What does the underlined sentence imply?
A.Never throw away the chicken soup while you are eating chickens.
B.Don’t think that drinking chicken soup is an effective way to prevent colds.
C.Don’t take it for granted that these cold “cures” can be put into clinical practiceimmediately.
D.Don’t drink any chicken soup before you get recovered from a cold.
4.Which statement is NOT true according to the passage?
A.Most of colds are caused by the rhinovirus.
B.Scientists had thought the cold viruses are far more complicated than facts.
C.Over half of asthma attacks are related to common colds.
D.An effective cure for the common cold is about to be found.
5.Which of the following could be the best title for the passage?
A.Protect Your Kids from the Common Cold
B.You Only Do It by Nature If You Catch a Cold
C.Scientists Make Progress in Curing the Common Cold
D.Useful Tips for You to Stay away from the Sniffles

Most Americans would have a difficult time telling you, specifically, what are the values which Americans live by. They have never given the matter any thought.
Over the years I have introduced thousands of international visitors to life in the United States. This has caused me to try to look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors. I am confident that the values listed in this booklet describe most (but not all )Americans, and that understanding these values can help you, the international visitor, understand Americans.
It is my belief that if foreign visitors really understand how deeply these 13 values are ingrained in Americans, they will then be able to understand 95% of American actions—actions which might otherwise appear “strange”, “confusing”, or “unbelievable” when evaluated from the perspective (aspect) of the foreigner's own society and its values.
The different behaviors of a people or a culture make sense only when seen through the basic beliefs, assumptions and values of that particular group. When you encounter (meet) an action, or hear a statement in the United States which surprises you, try to see it as an expression of one or more of the values listed in this booklet.
1. An ordinary American can't tell you his/her value system because ________.
A. this is something an American lives by
B. everyone will have his/her own value system
C. he/she has never thought about it
D. values are something often in their thought

A. invite foreigners to visit America
B. look at Americans through the eyes of foreign visitors

A. rooted in the minds
B. found in the grains

A. Americans are hard to understand

C. they view Americans according to the values in their own society
D. it is difficult to understand any people when you first encounter them

A little under one-third of U.S. families have no Internet access and do not plan to get it, with most of the holdouts seeing little use for it in their lives, according to a survey released on Friday.
Park Associates, a Dallas-based technology market research firm, said 29 percent of U.S. families, or 31 million homes, do not have Internet access and do not intend to subscribe(预订)to an Internet service over the next 12 months. The second annual National Technology Scan conducted by Park found that the main reason why potential customers say they do not subscribe to the Internet is because of the low value to their daily lives rather than concerns over cost.
Forty-four percent of these families say they are not interested in anything on the Internet, versus just 22 percent who say they cannot afford a computer or the cost of Internet service, the survey showed. The answer “I’m not sure how to use the Internet” came from 17 percent of participants who do not subscribe. The response “I do all my e-commerce shopping and YouTube-watching at work” was cited by 14 percent of Internet-access users. Three percent said the Internet doesn’t reach their homes.
The study found U.S. broadband adoption grew to 52 percent over , up from 42 percent in . Roughly half of new subscribers converted(转变)from slower-speed, dial-up Internet access while the other half of families had no prior access.
“The industry continues to chip(击破)away at the core of non-subscribers, but has a long way to go,” said John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates. “Entertainment applications will be the key. If anything will pull in the holdouts, it’s going to be applications that make the Internet more similar to pay-TV,” he predicted.

A. It is not an easy job to transform those holdouts into the Internet users
B. people will adopt dial-up Internet access no more
C. many Americans enjoy doing e-commerce shopping at home
D. more than half of the population are using the Internet in 2005
4. According to John Barrett, what is the key to attracting more U.S. families to broadband service?
A. making the Internet look more similar to TV set
B. applying the Internet more to entertainment
C. providing more pay-TV programs
D. chipping away at the core of non-subscribers
5. Which is the best title for the passage?
A. Web develops with technology B. The present situation of web

We produce 500 billion of plastic bags in a year worldwide and they are thrown away polluting oceans, killing wildlife and getting dumped in landfills where they take up to 1000 years to decompose. Researchers have been unsuccessfully looking for a solution.
The 16yearold Canadian high school student,Daniel Burd, from Waterloo Collegiate Institute, has discovered a way to make plastic bags degrade(分解) in as few as 3 months,a finding that won him first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair,a $10 000 prize,a $20 000 scholarship, and a chance to revolutionize a major environmental issue.
Burd's strategy was simple: Since plastic does eventually degrade, it must be eaten by microorganisms (微生物). If those microorganisms could be identified, we could put them to work eating the plastic much faster than under normal conditions.
With this goal in mind, he ground plastic bags into a powder and concocted(调制) a solution of household chemicals, yeast(酵母) and tap water to encourage microbes growth. Then he added the plastic powder and let the microbes work their magic for 3 months. Finally,he tested the resulting bacterial culture on plastic bags, exposing one plastic sample to dead bacteria as a control. Sure enough, the plastic exposed (暴露) to the live bacteria was 17% lighter than the control after six weeks.
The inputs are cheap:maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because microbes produce heat as they work, and the only outputs are water and tiny levels of carbon dioxide.
“Almost every week I have to do chores and when I open the closet door, I have piles of plastic bags falling on top of me. One day, I got tired of it and I wanted to know what other people are doing with these plastic bags. The answer:not much. So I decided to do something myself.”said Daniel Burd.
1. Daniel Burd won first prize at the Canada-Wide Science Fair because________.
A. he found a new kind of microorganism
B. he contributed much to environmental protection
C. he found a way to degrade plastics in shorter time
D. he could encourage microbes growth in an easier way
2. Daniel Burd exposed one plastic sample to dead bacteria to________.
A. make the live bacteria work better
B. test how effective his method was
C. know which bacteria worked faster
D. control the temperature in the process
3. Maintaining the required temperature takes little energy because ________.
A. plastics can get hot easily
B. microbes can produce heat themselves
C. much carbon dioxide is produced
D. the temperature can be controlled
4. Daniel Burd got his idea from ________.
A. his school textbook
B. the failure of researchers
C. his everyday work
D. the practice of other people

和后文中的“Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the pier(码头) when he saw something falling into the water.”
根据“...29??year??old Julien Duret from France is the man who left the spot quickly after the rescue...”
根据“He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had dived in after him.”
Something in chocolate could be used to stop coughs and lead to more effective medicines, say UK researchers.
Their study found that theobromine, found in cocoa, was nearly a third more effective in stopping coughs than codeine, which was considered the best cough medicine at present.
The Imperial College London researchers who published their results online said the discovery could lead to more effective cough treatment. “While coughing is not necessarily harmful(有害的) it can have a major effect on the quality of life, and this discovery could be a huge step forward in treating this problem,” said Professor Peter Barnes.
Ten healthy volunteers(志愿者) were given theobromine, codeine or placebo, a pill that contains no medicine, during the experiment. Neither the volunteers nor the researchers knew who received which pill. The researchers then measured levels of capsaicin, which is used in research to cause coughing and as a sign of how well the medicine are stopping coughs.
The team found that, when the volunteers were given theobromine, the capsaicin need to produce a cough was around a third higher than in the placebo group. When they were given codeine they need only slightly higher levers of capsaicin to cause a cough compared with the placebo.
The researchers said that theobromine worked by keeping down a verve activity(神经活动), which cause coughing. They also found that unlike some standard cough treatments, theobromine caused no side effects such as sleepiness.
1. According to Professor Barnes, theobromine ______.
A. cannot be as effective as codeine
B. can be harmful to people’s health
C. cannot be separated from chocolate
D. can be a more effective cure for coughs
2. What was used in the experiment to cause coughing?
A. Theobromine. B. Codeine. C. Capsaicin. D. Placebo.
3. We learn from the text that volunteers in the experiment _____.
A. were patients with bad coughs
B. were divided into the three groups
C. received standard treatments
D. suffered little side effects
4. Which of the following would be the best title for the text?
A. Codeine: A New Medicine B. Chocolate May Cure Coughs
C. Cough Treatment: A Hard Case D. Theobromine Can Cause Coughs
