第一个是渗透衍生词记忆法,就是将常出现的词汇连带它们的衍生词一同记忆,凡是衍生词,都与原词汇属于同一分支,表现为词性不同但意思相连,如define/definition; adjust/adjustment; evaluate/evaluation/evaluative等。

It lacked thegrammatical resources required to represent the world in an objective and impersonal way,and to discuss the relations, such as cause and effect, that might hold between complex andhypothetical entities.

同义词也是同义转换喜欢考查的部分,比如expansion/development; exaggerate/overstate等。

这类词汇有:aquaculture/delta/orbitalcortex/morphology/psychic/sea cow等等。

(Which paragraph contains the following information?)

比如,剑桥5 test 3 passage 3中,有一道段落信息配对题,命题是:how AI might have a military impact.

OCG (The Official Cambridge Guide to IELTS)中给出的阅读第一个test tip(P45): Read the passage as quickly as possible (up to three minutes).

i. Introduce an object or a fact

ii. Detailed deions

iii. Significance

i. Introduce a phenomenon or a problem

ii. Causes

iii. Effects

iv. Measures or future

该文章一共10段,分成section A, B, C, 对应的考题是list of headings, 即找出三个小标题分别给A, B, C三个部分。 The Impact of Wilderness Tourism,

ii. How local communities can balance their own needs with the demands of

wilderness tourism.

iii. Fragile regions and the reasons for the expansion of tourism there.

v. Some of the disruptive effects of wilderness tourism.

III.

i. Introduce an experiment and its purpose

ii. Subject, methods

iii. Process

iv. Result

v. Analysis

vi. Conclusion

如剑桥5T1P2 Nature or Nurture?

(Paragraph)

(Concise)

主动语态(active voice):比较例句a) Senator Dole planned to announce his resignation from the Senate.和例句b) To announce his resignation from the Senate was planned by Senator Dole.

肯定句(positive form):比较例句a) He was not very often on time. 和例句b) He usually came late.

例1:剑五-2:Open publication had dangers in putting into the public domain preliminary ideas which had not yet been fully exploited by their “author”.

进一步分析得知,这种风险在于:putting into the public domain preliminary ideas,“将一些初步的想法公诸于世”;最后以which引导的定于从句来修饰preliminary ideas,在这个从句中,主语是which,谓语是had not yet been fully exploited,所以汉语意思是:“这些初步的想法还未经它们的作者完全发掘出来”。

7-1:Unprecedented construction of tens of thousands of monumental engineering projects designed to control floods, protect clean water supplies, and provide water for irrigation and hydropower brought great benefits to hundreds of millions of people.

句子内部的designed to control floods, protect clean water supplies, and provide water for irrigation and hydropower则是一个后置定语来修饰projects。

剑五-2:Such expansion, which was to take the English language west to America and east to India, was supported by scientific developments such as the discovery of magnetism (and hence the invention of the compass), improvements in cartography and –perhaps the most important scientific revolution of them all-the new theories of astronomy and the movement of the Earth in relation to the planets and stars, developed by Copernicus (1473-1543).

Such expansion was supported by scientific developments.

Don’t wash those fossils!

Standard museum practice can wash away DNA.

1. Washing, brushing and varnishing fossils — all standard conservation treatments used by many fossil hunters and museum curators alike — vastly reduces the chances of recovering ancient DNA.

2. Instead, excavators should be handling at least some of their bounty with gloves, and freezing samples as they are found, dirt and all, concludes a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences today.

3. Although many palaeontologists know anecdotally that this is the best way to up the odds of extracting good DNA, Eva-Maria Geigl of the Jacques Monod Institute in Paris, France, and her colleagues have now shown just how important conservation practices can be. This information, they say, needs to be hammered home among the people who are actually out in the field digging up bones.

4. Geigl and her colleagues looked at 3,200-year-old fossil bones belonging to a single individual of an extinct cattle species, called an aurochs. The fossils were dug up at a site in France at two different times — either in 1947, and stored in a museum collection, or in , and conserved in sterile conditions at -20 oC.

5. The team’s attempts to extract DNA from the 1947 bones all failed. The newly excavated fossils, however, all yielded DNA.

6. Because the bones had been buried for the same amount of time, and in the same conditions, the conservation method had to be to blame says Geigl. “As much DNA was degraded in these 57 years as in the 3,200 years before,” she says.

Wash in, wash out

7. Because many palaeontologists base their work on the shape of fossils alone, their methods of conservation are not designed to preserve DNA, Geigl explains.

8. The biggest problem is how they are cleaned. Fossils are often washed together on-site in a large bath, which can allow water — and contaminants in the form of contemporary DNA — to permeate into the porous bones. “Not only is the authentic DNA getting washed out, but contamination is getting washed in,” says Geigl.

9. Most ancient DNA specialists know this already, says Hendrik Poinar, an evolutionary geneticist at McMaster University in Ontario, Canada. But that doesn’t mean that best practice has become widespread among those who actually find the fossils.

10. Getting hold of fossils that have been preserved with their DNA in mind relies on close relationships between lab-based geneticists and the excavators, says palaeogeneticist Svante P bo of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. And that only occurs in exceptional cases, he says.

11. P bo’s team, which has been sequencing Neanderthal DNA, continually faces these problems. “When you want to study ancient human and Neanderthal remains, there’s a big issue of contamination with contemporary human DNA,” he says.

12. This doesn’t mean that all museum specimens are fatally flawed, notes P bo. The Neanderthal fossils that were recently sequenced in his own lab, for example, had been part of a museum collection treated in the traditional way. But P bo is keen to see samples of fossils from every major find preserved in line with Geigl’s recommendations — just in case.

Warm and wet

13. Geigl herself believes that, with cooperation between bench and field researchers, preserving fossils properly could open up avenues of discovery that have long been assumed closed.

14. Much human cultural development took place in temperate regions. DNA does not survive well in warm environments in the first place, and can vanish when fossils are washed and treated. For this reason, Geigl says, most ancient DNA studies have been done on permafrost samples, such as the woolly mammoth, or on remains sheltered from the elements in cold caves — including cave bear and Neanderthal fossils.

15. Better conservation methods, and a focus on fresh fossils, could boost DNA extraction from more delicate specimens, says Geigl. And that could shed more light on the story of human evolution.

11. Paabo is still worried about the potential problems caused by treatments of fossils in traditional way.

Questions 12-13

Complete the following the statements by choosing letter A-D for each answer.

12. “This information” in paragraph 3 indicates:

[A] It is critical to follow proper practices in preserving ancient DNA.

[B] The best way of getting good DNA is to handle fossils with gloves.

[C] Fossil hunters should wear home-made hammers while digging up bones.

[D] Many palaeontologists know how one should do in treating fossils.

13. The study conducted by Geigl and her colleagues suggests:

[A] the fact that ancient DNA can not be recovered from fossil bones excavated in the past.

[B] the correlation between the amount of burying time and that of the recovered

DNA.

[C] the pace at which DNA degrades.

[D] the correlation between conservation practices and degradation of DNA.

Suggested answers and explanations

1. washing, brushing, varnishing

2. handling with gloves / freezing samples ( any one of the two ) 见第二段。

3. losing authentic DNA / being contaminated / contamination ( any one of the three) 见第八段 “Not only is the authentic DNA getting washed out, but contamination is getting washed in” (答being contaminated或 contamination比较保险)

4. they are porous porous 。。 which can allow water — and contaminants in the form of contemporary DNA — to permeate into the porous bones.”

8. T 见第四段 “Geigl and her colleagues looked at 3,200-year- old fossil bones belonging to a single individual of an extinct cattle species, called an aurochs.”

11. T 见第十二段末句 “But P bo is keen to see samples of fossils from every major find preserved in line with Geigl’s recommendations — just in case.”

。。 just how important conservation practices can be” (to preserve good DNA)。

Medieval period

Main article: Medieval theatre

By the medieval period, the mummers' plays had developed, a form of early street theatre associated with the Morris dance, concentrating on themes such as Saint George and the Dragon and Robin Hood. These were folk tales re-telling old stories, and the actors travelled from town to town performing these for their audiences in return for money and hospitality.

Renaissance: Elizabethan and Jacobean periods

The period known as the English Renaissance, approximately 1500—1660, saw a flowering of the drama and all the arts. The two candidates for the earliest comedy in English Nicholas Udall's Ralph Roister Doister (c. 1552) and the anonymous Gammer Gurton's Needle (c. 1566), belong to the 16th century. During the reign of Elizabeth I (1558–1603) and then James I (1603–25), in the late 16th and early 17th century, a London-centred culture, that was both courtly and popular, produced great poetry and drama. The English playwrights were intrigued by Italian model: a conspicuous community of Italian actors had settled in London. The linguist and lexicographer John Florio (1553–1625), whose father was Italian, was a royal language tutor at the Court of James I, and a possible friend of and influence on William Shakespeare, had brought much of the Italian language and culture to England. He was also the translator of Montaigne into English. The earliest Elizabethan plays includes Gorboduc (1561) by Sackville and Norton and Thomas Kyd's (1558–94) revenge tragedy The Spanish Tragedy (1592), that influenced Shakespeare's Hamlet.

17th and 18th centuries

Aphra Behn was the first professional English woman playwright.

During the Interregnum 1649—1660, English theatres were kept closed by the Puritans for religious and ideological reasons. When the London theatres opened again with the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, they flourished under the personal interest and support of Charles II. Wide and socially mixed audiences were attracted by topical writing and by the introduction of the first professional

actresses (in Shakespeare's time, all female roles had been played by boys). New genres of the Restoration were heroic drama, pathetic drama, and Restoration comedy. Notable heroic tragedies of this period include John Dryden's All for Love (1677) and Aureng-zebe (1675), and Thomas Otway's Venice Preserved (1682). The Restoration plays that have best retained the interest of producers and audiences today are the comedies, such as George Etherege's The Man of Mode (1676), William Wycherley's The Country Wife (1676), John Vanbrugh's The Relapse (1696), and William Congreve's The Way of the World (1700). This period saw the first professional woman playwright, Aphra Behn, author of many comedies including The Rover (1677). Restoration comedy is famous or notorious for its sexual explicitness, a quality encouraged by Charles II (1660–1685) personally and by the rakish aristocratic ethos of his court.

Victorian era

A change came in the Victorian era with a profusion on the London stage of farces, musical burlesques, extravaganzas and comic operas that competed with Shakespeare productions and serious drama by the likes of James Planché and Thomas William Robertson. In 1855, the German Reed Entertainments began a process of elevating the level of (formerly risqué) musical theatre in Britain that culminated in the famous series of comic operas by Gilbert and Sullivan and were followed by the 1890s with the first Edwardian musical comedies. W. S. Gilbert and Oscar Wilde were leading poets and dramatists of the late Victorian period.[16] Wilde's plays, in particular, stand apart from the many now forgotten plays of Victorian times and have a much closer relationship to those of the Edwardian dramatists such as Irishman George Bernard Shaw and Norwegian Henrik Ibsen.

题目:Thomas Young ~The Last True Know一It一All

A Thomas Young(1773一1829)contributed 63 articles to the Encyclopedia Britannica, Including 46 Biographical entries(mostly on scientists and classicists) and substantial essays on “Bridge,”Chromatics,“ ”Egypt,“”Languages, and“Tides” Was someone who could write authoritatively about so many subjects a polymath, a genius or a dilettante? In an ambitious new biography, Andrew Robinson argues that Young is a good contender for the epitaph“the last man who knew everything” Young has competition, however: The phrase, which Robinson takes for his title, also serves as the subtitle of two other recent biographies: Leonard Warren's life of paleontologist Joseph Leidy (1823一1891) and Paula Findlen's 2004 book on Athanasius Kircher (1602一1680), another polymath.

B Young, of course, did more than write encyclopedia entries . He presented hid first paper to the Royal Society of London at the age of 2O and was elected a Fellow a week after his 2lst birthday. In the paper, Young explained the process of accommodation in the human eye一on how the eye focuses properly on objects at varying distances. Young hypothesized that this was achieved by changes in the shape of the lens. Young also theorized that light traveled in waves and he believed that, to account for the ability to see in color, there must be three receptors in the eye corresponding to the three ”principal colors“ to which the retina could respond: red, green, violet. All these hypotheses were subsequently proved to be correct.

C Later in his life, when he was in his forties, Young was instrumental in cracking the code that Unlocked the unknown sc ript on the Rosetta Stone,a tablet that was ”found“ in Egypt by the Napo leonic army in1799.The stone contains text in three alphabets: Greek, something Unrecognizable and Egyptian hieroglyphs. The unrecognizable sc ript is now known as demotic and, as Young deduced, is related directly to hieroglyphic. His initial work on this appeared in his Britannica entry on Egypt. In another entry, he coined the term Indo一European to describe the family of languages spoken throughout most of Europe and northern India. These are the landmark achievements of a man who was a child prodigy and who, unlike many remarkable children, did not disappear into oblivion as an adult.

D Bom in 1773 in Somerset in England, Young lived from an early age with his maternal Grandfather ,eventually leaving to attend boarding school. He had devoured books from the age of two, and through his own initiative he excelled at Latin, Greek, mathematics and natural philosophy. After leaving school , he was greatly encouraged by his mother's uncle, Richard Brocklesby, a physician and Fellow of the Royal Society. Following Brocklesby lead, Young decided to pursue a career in medicine. He studied in London, following the medical circuit, and then moved on to more formal education in Edinburgh, G6ttingen and Cambridge. After completing his medical training at the University of Cambridge in 1808, Young set up practice as a physician in London. He soon became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and a few years later was appointed physician at St. George’s Hospital.

E Young’s skill as a physician, however, did not equal his skill as a scholar of natural philosophy or linguistics. Earlier, in 1801, he had been appointed to a professorship of natural philosophy at the Royal Institution, where he delivered as many as 60 lectures in a year. These were published in two volumes in 1807. In 1804 Young had become secretary to the Royal Society, a post he would hold until his death. His opinions were sought on civic and national matters, such as the introduction of gas lighting to London and methods of ship construction. From 1819 he was superintendent of the Nautical Almanac and secretary to the Board of Longitude. From 1824 to 1829 he was physician to and inspector of calculations for the Palladian Insurance Company. Between 1816 and 1825 he contributed his many and various entries to the Encyclopedia Britannica, and throughout his career he authored numerous books, essays and papers.

F Young is a perfect subject for a biography - perfect, but daunting. Few men contributed so much to so many technical fields. Robinson^ aim is to introduce non-scientists to Young5s work and life. He succeeds, providing clear expositions of the technical material (especially that on optics and Egyptian hieroglyphs). Some readers of this book will, like Robinson, find Young’s accomplishments impressive; others will see him as some historians have - as a dilettante. Yet despite the rich material presented in this book, readers will not end up knowing Young personally. We catch glimpses of a playful Young, doodling Greek and Latin phrases in his notes on medical lectures and translating the verses that a young lady had written on the walls of a summerhouse into Greek elegiaes. Young was introduced into elite society, attended the theatre and learned to dance and play the flute. In addition, he was an accomplished horseman. However, his personal life looks pale next to his vibrant career and studies.

G Young married Eliza Maxwell in 1804, and according to Robinson, ”their marriage was a happy one and she appreciated his work11 Almost all we know about her is that she sustained her husband through some rancorous disputes about optics and that she worried about money when his medical career was slow to take off. Veiy little evidence survives about the complexities of Young5s relationships with his mother and father. Robinson does not credit them, or anyone else, with shaping Young5 s extraordinary mind. Despite the lack of details concerning Young5 s relationships, however, anyone interested in what it means to be a genius should read this book.

What is currently the main area of work of each of the following people?

I only concern myself with looking after the mechanical side of things – keeping the trains going.

Quiz 小测

Common test

Essay小论文

Thesis论文

Paper论文

Dissertation论文

Assignment大作业

Case study

Individual project

Group project

Presentation

Lab report

Final exam

-调查方法(常考interview/telephone interview/questionnaire)

1)The floors are made of reclaimed wood 很多同学会纠结reclaimed,反而忽略floors。

2)The researchers may select them according to their income.

ph/f/,如:physics, pharmacy, telegraph

qu/kw/,如:quiet, require

sh/∫/,如:sheep, ship, shell, cash, rubbish

sion/∫?n/,如:tension, decision, revision, vision

ch/t?;k; ∫/如:chase, technology, chef

th/θ/、/ ?/,如:think, theory, author

常见副词有on, in, at, between, by, about, over, below…

More teams will be formed to work on a particular_________.

Analyze data-identify___________,e.g. cause and effect

23 Home medical aids

24 Regular amounts of exercise

25 Feelings of control over life

26 Feelings of loneliness

A may cause heart disease.

B can be helped by hormone treatment.

C may cause rises in levels of stress hormones.

D have cost theUnited Statesgovernment more than $200 billion.

E may help prevent mental decline.

F may get stronger at night.

G allow old people to be more independent.

H can reduce stress in difficult situations.

原文:

Maintaining a level of daily physical activity may help mental functioning, says Carl Cotman, a neuroscientist at the University of California at Irvine. He found that rats that exercise on a treadmill have raised levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor coursing through their brains. Cotman believes this hormone, which keeps neurons functioning, may prevent the brains of active humans from deteriorating.

However, the major problems of the travel and tourism industry that have hidden, or obscured, its economic impact are the diversity and fragmentation of the industry itself.

Marie and Pierre Curie’s research into the radioactivity of the mineral known as 8……… led to the discovery of two new elements.

原文:Turning her attention to minerals, she found her interest drawn to pitchblende, a mineral whose radioactivity, superior to that of pure uranium, could be explained only by the presence in the ore of small quantities of an unknown substance of very high activity. Pierre Curie joined her in the work that she had undertaken to resolve this problem, and that led to the discovery of the new elements, polonium and radium.

The original patent outlined a three-stage process, in which phenol and formaldehyde (from wood or coal) were initially combined under vacuum inside a large egg-shaped kettle. The result was a resin known as Novalak, which became soluble and malleable when heated. The resin was allowed to cool in shallow trays until it hardened, and then broken up and ground into powder. Other substances were then introduced: including fillers, such as woodflour, asbestos or cotton, which increase strength and moisture resistance, catalysts (substances to speed up the reaction between two chemicals without joining to either) and hexa, a compound of ammonia and formaldehyde which supplied the additional formaldehyde necessary to form a thermosetting resin.

分析:很多同学在做这道题时,利用第6题前面的ammonia和formaldehyde定位,在原文中第4句中,我们看到了一个a compound of ammonia and formaldehyde … 但是我们来看一下,a compound of ammonia and formaldehyde …

THE AIM OF THE WRITER(作者写文章的目的)、THE TITLE(文章的标题)、THE MAIN THEME(文章的主旨)。

我们以剑七Test 1,Passage 2为例,在这篇文章中,E段首句“At the outset of the new millennium, however, the way resource planners think about water is beginning to change。” Scientists' call for a revision of policy. F段首句”Fortunately – and unexpectedly- the demand for water is not rising as rapidly as some predicted。” A surprising downward trend in demand for water。G段同理,首句“What explains this remarkable turn of events?” 而D段首句“The consequence of our water policies extend beyond jeopardizing human health。” 种问题,而后一句“Nearly one fifth of all the electricity generated worldwide is produced by turbines spun by the power of falling water。” How a global challenge was met。

一定的词汇量恐怕是做好雅思阅读最基本的前提。 总有学生问道,到底需要记下多少单词才可以考雅思。 常见的理论当然是越多越好,这样就可以扫清所有的障碍。然后就有学生下定决心去记下所有的阅读生词。 这样固好,只是从使用的角度,并不是所有的生词都需要我们去花费大量的精力。那么雅思的阅读词汇是怎么考的,我们看下面一个例子;

Original text: The seasonal impact of day length on physiological responses is called photoperiodism, and the amount of experimental evidence for this phenomenon is considerable.

Statement: There is plenty of scientific evidence to support photoperiodism.

Original text: Such expansion, which was to take the English language west to America and east to India, was supported by scientific developments such as the discovery of magnetism (and hence the invention of the compass), improvements in cartography and – perhaps the most important scientific revolution of them all - the new theories of astronomy and the movement of the earth in relation to the planets and stars.

Statement: The most important scientific development of the renaissance 点击发音 period was the discovery of magnetism.

In Life,We are Happiest When…

A man and his girlfriend were married. It was a large celebration. All of their friends and family came to see the lovely ceremony and to partake of the festivities and celebrations. All

had wonderful time.

The bride was gorgeous in her white wedding gown and the groom was very dashing in his black tuxedo. Everyone could tell that the love they had for each other was true.

A few months later, the wife came to the husband with a proposal, “I read in a magazine, a while ago, about how we can strengthen our marriage,” she offered, “Each of us will write a

list of the things that we find a bit annoying with the other person. Then,we can talk about how we can fix them together and make our lives happier together.”The husband agreed. So each of them went to a separate room in the house and thought of the things that annoyed them about the other. They thought about this question for the rest of the day and wrote down what they came up with. The next morning, at the breakfast table, they decided thatthey would go over their lists.

“I'II start,“ offered the wife. She took out her list. It had many items on it. Enough to fill 3 pages, in fact. As she started reading the list of the little annoyances, she noticed that tears

were starting to appear in her husband's eyes.

”What' s wrong?“ she asked. ”Nothing,”the husband replied, “keep reading your list.”

The wife continued to read until she had read all three pages to her husband. She neatly placed her list on the table and folded her hands over the top of it.

“Now, you read your list and then we'll talk about the things on both of our lists.” She said happily.

Quietly the husband stated, “I don't have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the way that you are. I don't want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and I wouldn't want to try and change anything about you.”

Quietly the husband stated, “I don't have anything on my list. I think that you are perfect the way that you are. I don't want you to change anything for me. You are lovely and wonderful and

I wouldn't want to try and change anything about you.”

The wife, touched by his honesty and the depth of his love for her and his acceptance of her, turned her head and wept.

In life, there are enough times when we are disappointed, depressed and annoyed. We don't really have to go looking for them. We have a wonderful world that is full of beauty, light and promise. Why waste time in this world looking for the bad, disappointing or annoying when we can look around us, and see the wondrous things before us?
