GRE Verbal

GRE Verbal-Sentence Equivalence GRE

When you have selected your pair of answer choices, check to make sure that each one produces a sentence that is logically, grammatically and stylistically coherent, and that the two sentences mean the same thing.

1:To believe that a culture's achievement can be measured by the ------- of its written material requires one to accept that a page of junk mail is as ------- as a page of great literature.

A. nature readable

B. quality prevalent

C. timelessness understandable

D. applicability eloquent

E. volume valuable

2:As the creation of new knowledge through science has become ---- resistance to innovation has become less ---- taking the form of inertia rather than direct attack.

A. controversial sporadic

B. institutionalized aggressive

C. essential effective

D. public circumspect

E. suspect lively

1. Because of its lack of theaters, the city came, ironically, to be viewed as an _________ theater town, and that reputation led entrepreneurs to believe that it would be _________ to build new theaters there.

(A) unprofitable...riskywww.Examw.com

(B) untapped...pointless

(C) unappreciated..difficult

(D) unlikely...appropriate

(E) unimpressed...shrewd

2. By idiosyncratically refusing to dismiss an insubordinate member of his staff, the manager not only _________established policy, but he also _________ his heretofore good chances for promotion.

(A) instituted...bettered

(B) recognized...protected

(C) contravened...jeopardized

(D) reiterated...computed

(E) delimited...restricted

分析:not only…but also…

3. Thomas Paine, whose political writing was often flamboyant, was in private life a surprisingly _________ man: he lived in rented rooms, ate little, and wore drab clothes.

(A) simple

(B) controversial

(C) sordid

(D) comfortable

(E) discourteous

The economists were _______ to find that the theory that they had considered ________ crumbled when modern techniques for economic modeling made it possible to make new kinds of observation that contradicted its fundamental assumptions.

A surprised . . . problematic

B overjoyed . . . useful

C stunned . . . invulnerable

D disappointed . . . faulty

E astonished . . . suspect

Always less secure in herself than she liked to make out, she too often ________ disagreement as ________ and opposition as treachery.

A rewarded … virtue

B construed … betrayal

C condemned … detachment

D invited … provocation

E interpreted … drollery

1、Many artists believe that successful imitation, far from being symptomatic of a lack of______, is the first step in

learning to be creative.

(A) elegance

(B) resolution

(C) goodness

(D) originality

(E) sympathy

2、The sheer diversity of tropical plants represents a seemingly______source of raw materials, of which only a few

have been utilized.

(A) exploited

(B) quantifiable

(C) controversial

(D) inexhaustible

(E) remarkable

3、Not all the indicators necessary to convey the effect of depth in a picture work simultaneously; the picture's illusion

of______three-dimensional appearance must therefore result from the viewer's integration of various indicators

perceived______.

(A) imitative...coincidentally

(B) uniform...successively

(C) temporary...comprehensively

(D) expressive...sympathetically

(E) schematic...passively

motivated by its______before he acted.

(A) rewards...chastisement

(B) balm...eloquence

(C) reproaches...promptings

(D) ridicule...allure

(E) qualms...atonement

2、Charlotte Salomon's biography is a reminder that the currents of private life, however diverted, dislodged, or twisted

by ______public events, retain their hold on the______recording them.

(A) transitory...culture

(B) dramatic...majority

(C) overpowering...individual

(D) conventional...audience

(E) relentless...institution

3、Longdale and Stern discovered that mitochondria and chloroplasts______a long, identifiable sequence of DNA; such

a coincidence could be______only by the transfer of DNA between the two systems.

(A) manufacture...accomplished

(B) reveal...repeated

(C) exhibit...determined

(D) share...explained

(E) maintain...contradicted

Or Theatre?”

This is a tough question. The type of words that canfit in the blank is relatively obvious. Basically, officialsare warning, urging, or recommending citizens. Now,we have to find a pair of words that create a similarmeaning.

(A) is a neutral word that can work for the context. However, there is no matching word. (B), which means urging, works well, but apparently thereare no matching words (we'll come back to that in a moment).

(C) is a word used by those not in a position of power to appeal to those in a position ofpower, which is the opposite of the context.

(D) works well. But it creates a meaning different from any of the other words. 'Enlisting' impliesthat the city is rounding up a group of specific people to help rake up leaves.

(E) means to recommend. This word is not quite the same as to remind.

That leaves us with (F), which is a tricky word. Enjoin can mean prohibit, which is clearly wrongin this context. Enjoin can also mean to urge, which is nearly the opposite of prohibit. In thissense, (F) and (B) create similar sentences.

To pay for the extra spending under this international poverty plan, each American would have to contribute less than the cost of buying a premium cup of coffee once a week. But financial aid is not(i)___, and even if the funding recommended here were to (ii)_____, the grandest objectives may well remain unfulfilled. Nonetheless, carefully targeted aid can reward responsible governments, (iii)_____individual initiative, and alleviate suffering. Many will think that's worth a cup of coffee.

Blank(i) A.an impediment B.a panacea C.a malady

Blank(ii) D.be insufficient E.recede F.materialize

Blank(iii) G. bviate H.temper I.encourage

And后面是一个让步转折,让步转折的句子,意思的重点落在转折部分,即the grandest objectives may well remainunfulfilled.

F. materialize.

panacea n. a remedy for all ills or difficulties 万灵药

temper v. to dilute, qualify, or soften by theaddition or influence of something else : moderate

因果:because, in that, for, therefore, thus, accordingly, consequently, given, hence, so…that, so...as to, if...then, when...then, as long as...

转折:albeit, although, though, but, despite, even though, however, in spite of, nevertheless, nonetheless, notwithstanding, while, whatever, regardless, even if, even though, yet, and yet...

递进:even, indeed...

对比:in contrast, on the contrary, far from, on the other hand, rather than, instead of, not…but, paradoxically, ironically, surprisingly, unexpectedly, curiously...

The eradication of pollution is not merely a matter of ___, though the majestic beauty of nature is indeed an important consideration.

A. economics B. legislation C. cleanliness D. aesthetics E. restoration

Comparatively few rock musicians are willing to laugh at themselves, although a hint of----can boost sales of video clips very nicely.

A. self-deprecation B. congeniality C. cynicism D. embarrassment E. self-doubt

Melodramas, which presented stark oppositions between innocence and criminality, virtue and corruption, good and evil, were popular precisely because they offered the audience a world ___of___.

A. bereft.. theatricality B. composed.. adversity C. full.. circumstantiality D. deprived.. polarity

E. devoid.. neutrality

The Muses are___deities: they avenge themselves without mercy on those who weary of their charms.

A. rueful B. ingenuous C. solicitous D. vindictive E. dispassionate

Unenlightened authoritarian managers rarely recognize a crucial reason for the low levels of serious conflict among members of democratically run work groups: a modicum of tolerance for dissent often prevents___。

A. demur B. schism C. cooperation D. compliance E. shortsightedness

The valedictory address, as it has developed in American colleges and universities over the years, has become a very strict form, a literary ___ that permits very little ___.

A. text.. clarity B. work.. tradition C. genre.. deviation

D. oration.. grandiloquence E. achievement.. rigidity

a literary ___ that permits very little ___. 是前面的a very strict form的同位语,所以第一空格填form的同义或近义词,that permits very little___.

Many more eighteenth-century novels were written by women than by men, but this dominance has, until very

recently, been regarded merely as ___ fact, a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers。

A. a controversial B. a statistical C. an analytical D. an explicit E. an unimpeachable

这道题同样,a bit of arcane knowledge noted only by bibliographers.

1:It is assumed that scientists will avoid making _____ claims about the results of their experiments because of the likelihood that they will be exposed when other researchers cannot _____ their findings.

A. Hypothetical… evaluate

B. Fraudulent… duplicate

C. Verifiable… contradict

D. Radical… contest

E. Extravagant… dispute

2:Those who fear the influence of television deliberately_______ its persuasive power, hoping that they might keep knowledge of its potential to effect social change from being widely disseminated.

(A) promote

(B) underplay

(C) excuse

(D) laud

(E) suspect

1: The scientist found it puzzling that his rival‘s theory retained its_______ despite widespread suggestions that it was now _______.

A. perspective…dated

B. currency…moribund

C. appeal …accepted

D. complexity…unfathomable

E. credibility…recognized

2: Paleontologists‘ assumptions about the equable nature of the climate on the primeval island of Pangaea are ________ computer simulations indicating that the island‘s temperatures tended to _______ during the course of a year.

A. based on… cool

B. confirmed by… vary

C. challenged by…stabilize

D. bolstered by…soar

E. undermined by…fluctuate

In deciding which of five words or sets of words can best be substituted for blank spaces in an incomplete sentence, you must analyze the relationships among the component parts of the sentence”。在其中我们不难发现关键词句,即“analyze the relationships among the component parts of the sentence”。

对立关系的句子很多,凡是出现but, yet, however, nevertheless, although, (even) though, while, whereas, notwithstanding, despite, in spite of, in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise, ironically, paradoxically, curiously, surprisingly 等带有转折逆转含义的题目,则代入空格的正确选项必与中心线索构成语义对立的反义词关系。

In spite of the increasing _______ of their opinions, the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented.

A. impartiality

B. consistency

C. judiciousness

D. incisiveness

E. polarity

A impartiality, “不偏不倚, 公正, 公平”

B consistency “一致性, 连贯性”

C judiciousness “明智”

D incisiveness “深刻,激烈”

E polarity “极端”

那么,我们要先把后半句话的意思弄明白了,the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented 即“这个团体知道他们不得不达成一致意见以便作出决定”。

Though his contemporaries tended to fixate on the politician's supposed _______,his personal correspondence _______ a surprising largesse.

A. Charity. . Confirms

B. Parsimony. . Contradicts

C. Avarice. . Betrays

D. Integrity. . Reveals

E. Generosity. . Bespeaks

An essential purpose of the criminal justice system is to enable purgation to take place; that is, to provide a --------- by which a community expresses its collective --------- the transgression of the criminal.

(A) catharsis ... outrage at

(B) disclaimer ... forgiveness of

(C) means ... empathy with

(D) procedure ... distaste for

(E) document ... disapprobation of

无疑是对此前的那个不定式结构“to enable purgation to take place”的复述。

E. volume valuable

2:As the creation of new knowledge through science has become ---- resistance to innovation has become less ---- taking the form of inertia rather than direct attack.

A. controversial sporadic

B. institutionalized aggressive

C. essential effective

D. public circumspect

E. suspect lively

(2 )A but B

(8)逻辑对立词:shift,change,be challenged by,oscillate等。

GRE填空重点信息标志:出现but, yet, however, nevertheless, although, (even) though, while, whereas, notwithstanding, despite, in spite of, in contrast (to), on the contrary, on the other hand, whatever, otherwise, ironically, paradoxically, curiously, surprisingly 等带有转折逆转含义的题目,则代入空格的正确选项必与中心线索构成语义对立的反义词关系。

In spite of the increasing _______ of their opinions, the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented.

A. impartiality

B. consistency

C. judiciousness

D. incisiveness

E. polarity

A impartiality, “不偏不倚, 公正, 公平”

B consistency “一致性, 连贯性”

C judiciousness “明智”

D incisiveness “深刻,激烈”

E polarity “极端”

那么,我们要先把后半句话的意思弄明白了,the group knew they had to arrive at a consensus so that the award could be presented 即“这个团体知道他们不得不达成一致意见以便作出决定”。
