Do You Have to Be a Workaholic to Rise High in Your Job

(1) It's clear, from Supreme Court nominee Sotomayor's Senate confirmation hearings, that she has a warm relationship with her family and friends, including her beloved mother and brother.

But in her rise through the legal profession, she has made a number of personal sacrifices, most notably marriage and children.

Ms. Sotomayor's marriage to her high-school sweetheart ended after just a few years,in part, she has said, because of an excessive work schedule. “I cannot attribute that divorce to work,” she told a panel on judicial life. (2) “But certainly the fact that I was leaving my home at 7:00am and getting back at 10:00pm was not of assistance in the problems developing in my marriage.”

“I have found it difficult to maintain a relationship while I've pursued my career,” Ms. Sotomayor also said in a television interview.

Ms. Sotomayor was subsequently engaged, but that 8-year relationship ended, too before they went to the altar. She has no children. These days, her life is “frantically busy, fulfilling and often aloof,” according to the New York Times. “You make play dates with her months and months in advance because of her schedule,” a friend of hers told the New York Times.

Earlier this week, we discussed Jack Welch's views on work-life balance. He argued that for women to rise to the top, “they've got to make tough choices and know the consequences of each one.”

But such choices aren't just necessary for women, as Juggle readers have pointed out. Men, too, often make hard sacrifices (failed marriages, missing their children grow up) to reach the pinnacles of their careers, especially in our increasingly workaholic and wired culture.

As the New York Times columnist Brooks put it: “This is the story of pressures that affect men as well as women (men are just more likely to make fools of themselves in response, as the news of the last few years indicates). (3) It's the story of people in a meritocracy that gets more Purified and competitive by the years with the time demands growing more and more insistent.”

He adds that Ms. Sotomayor's life “overlaps with a broader class of high achievers. You don't succeed at that level without developing a single-minded focus, and struggling against its consequences.”

(4)I find this all a bit depressing and reductive because it seems like those who make it to the top must be, by necessity, workaholic automatons. I wonder, Juggle readers, is it ever possible to rise high in a profession without being an unceasing, laser-focused workaholic? Are there examples in your own workplaces of people who have managed that feat?

When the Kids' Favorite Toy Is Daddy's iPhone

Yesterday, my toddler broke another toy. But this wasn't an inexpensive, plastic doo-dad. It was my husband's iPhone.

Like many parents these days, my husband and I sometimes band over our smartphones to our son to soothe him or keep him entertained. It's partly laziness on our party---no other toy, it seems, can captivate him like the iPhone or BlackBerry. He's fascinated by the buttons and touchscreen, the sounds and lights. He hold it up to his ear and pretends he's making an important business call (or arranging a playdate with his best friend.) He somehow even managed to reprogram my BlackBerry to autotype in the Catalan language.

(1) When we take away the BlackBerry or iPhone he wails; no other plaything even a pretty realistic toy cellphone satisfies him as much. (The marketing copy for the toy phone says ”This authentic looking play phone will surely distract your child from getting a hold of your cell phone!“ Ha! I wish.)

We often hide our phones-we don't want him to ruin them or grow too dependent on them but be almost always tracks them down once he hears the ring or the buzz of an incoming message. (Hiding a phone is tough, however, for those parents who need to have phones handy in case they're on call or the office beckons.) (2) And when we pick up the phone or check messages, that only makes our son want the phone more, since he always wants whatever is in our hands.

Invariably, my son sticks the phone in his mouth and it ends up slobbery and pocked with bitemarks. Or when be eventually tires of the phone, he'll toss it aside, which is how my husband's iPhone met its recent doom.

We're not alone in using our cellphones as high-tech rattles. (3) The AP recently ran a story on how more parents are downloading kid-friendly apps, such as white noise and rattle sounds and easy video games, to their cellphones. And according to a recent NPR report, one parent to encourage his 11-month-old baby to crawl, waves his Blackberry so the baby will crawl toward the gadget.

Readers, do you ever resort to handing over your smartphones to your kids? Any horror stories? Any good kid-friendly apps to recommend?

A ”Career-Life“ Crisis

In the new movie Up in the Air, Anna Kendrick stars opposite George Clooney as Natalie Keener, an ambitious new college graduate who takes a job at a company whose business is to fire people.

(1) Natalie quickly gets to work developing a videoconferencing system that saves the company millions by performing terminations online. While on a cross-country trip to learn the rope, however, Natalie is shaken by the emotional implications of her prized job and quits.

These days, many people---young and old---are experiencing a career-life crisis, asking: ”What do I do when I realize my dream job isn't so wonderful after all?“

Not long after Christine Hassler, 33 years old, of Los Angeles landed a prestigious and lucrative job as a Hollywood agent, she found herself arriving at work with knots in her stomach and counting the minutes until the weekend.

”I didn't like the job, and I didn't like the person I was becoming while doing it-stressed out, irritable and unmotivated,“ she says.

Recognize the Impact

(2) Securing a position in your most desired field is a major achievement, and when the day-to-day work doesn't turn out to be as great as you thought it would be, it's normal to feel depressed, disappointed and confused.

You may feel powerless to make a decision, and this state of limbo can cause you to experience physical symptoms like insomnia, malaise and stomachaches.

Examine Expectations

The way to cope is first to examine your expectations. Says Ms. Hassler: (3)”Often, the first few years at a job aren't the most thrilling because you're learning the ropes, and it may be unreasonable to think that you'll be jumping out of bed to go to work every day, or that you'll get promoted before you've had time to prove yourself.“

Plan on the Sidelines

If you're certain that you've made a wrong turn not to get mired in feelings of negativity. ”If you go to work every day with a woe-is-me attitude, you are going to feel even worse,“ says Ms. Hassler, who eventually left Hollywood to become a life coach and book author. She suggests talking about your feelings with a friend or mentor, but keeping your game face on at work.

Maintain your work reputation and in your free time you can start putting plans in place to transition your career. (4) Begin researching positions that are a better fit for your skills and interests, start saving money, and attend networking activities in different industries so that you can get plugged into their communities.

Take the Pressure Off

And don't do anything rash. Although it's normal to make a career detour, it's also hard work, so you'll be well served to consider your next move carefully. (5) Putting pressure on yourself to find the perfect career right now will not make it happen any faster, so remove the sense of urgency.

”Relax and spend some time getting to know yourself,“ says Ms. Hassler. ”As we get a clearer picture of who we are, then what we want to do becomes easier to identify.“

Is 0ffice Gossip Helpful or Hurtful

Do you take part in office gossip? I don't like to think of myself as a gossip, but I have to admit I often do it In my turbulent industry,I justify my behavior -perhaps wrongly -by reasoning that gossip helps me get information and figure out what is going on.

Amid a rise in office gossip, researchers are disagreeing over whether it is fundamentally good or bad. Some defend it as a way of building bonds among people and sharing essential information. But others hold that office gossip can be savage and destructive, as the New York Times reports. (At one company, PrintingForLess.com, which has a strict no-gossip policy, gossiping about colleagues can become a firing offense.)

(1) In one case analyzed in a scholarly journal, middle school teachers' gossip about their principal became so poisonous that the principal retaliated, many teachers fled the schoo1 and students' test scores declined. In this case, gossip amounted to ”a form of warfare that brought everyone down.“

On the other hand, less malignant gossip that stops short of repeating lies or breaching confidences can serve as a source of understanding, (2) Gossip helps us analyze the motivations of other people, and enables those low on the food chain, in particular, to understand how power is used in their organizations, says this New York Times article. It is relaxing, it brings people together, and as a pastime it beats gambling, drinking or doing drugs, this reasoning holds.

Whatever side you take, gossip is here to stay. It is a universal human practice and it is too complex to say it is either good or bad, a University of Colorado researcher says. When researchers at Case Western University asked students to cite 1essons they had 1earned from gossip, the students gave these examples: ”Infidelity will eventually catch up with you“ and ”Cheerfu1 peop1e are not oecessari1y happy.“ This positive dimension of gossip was featured receot1y in the news1etter Work & Family Life.

(3)I have seen gossip he1p co-workers in some places where I have work, giving rise to compassion or offers of support when someone is going though hard times. On the other hand, I have also seen gossip over an office romance, for example-distract people from the work and even force unwanted transfers.
