the first arbor datook place on april 10, 1872 in nebraska. it wathe brainchild of juliusterling morton (1832-1902), a nebraska journalist and politician originallfrom michigan. throughout hilong and productive career, morton worked to improve agricultural techniquein hiadopted state and throughout the united statewhen he served apresident grover clevelandsecretarof agriculture. but himost important legaciarbor day.
morton (photo, right) felt that nebraskalandscape and economwould benefit from the wide-scale planting of trees. he set an example himself planting orchards, shade treeand wind breakon hiown farm and he urged hineighbourto follow suit. mortonreal opportunity, though, arrived when he became a member of nebraskastate board of agriculture. he proposed that a special dabe set aside dedicated to tree planting and increasing awarenesof the importance of trees. nebraskafirst arbor dawaan amazing success. more than one million treewere planted. a second arbor datook place in 1884 and the young state made it an annual legal holidain 1885, using april 22nd to coincide with mortonbirthday.
in the yearfollowing that first arbor day, mortonidea spread beyond nebraska with kansas, tennessee, minnesota and ohio all proclaiming their own arbor days. todaall 50 statecelebrate arbor daalthough the datemavarin keeping with the local climate. (state arbor days) at the federal level, in 1970, president richard nixon proclaimed the last fridain april anational arbor day. arbor daialso now celebrated in other countrieincluding australia. variationare celebrated agreening week of japan, the new yeardayof trees in israel, the tree-loving week of korea, the reforestation week of yugoslavia, the students afforestation day of iceland and the national festival of tree planting in india. juliusterling morton would be proud. sometimeone good idea can make a real difference.
