(College Degree)
about a decade ago, university students could find satisfactory and enviable jobs after their graduation.
but now, things are different. today's university students usually have much pressure in finding fairly good jobs. they always say disappointedly that graduation means joblessness. why nowadays university students have so much pressure in finding jobs? in my opinion, this kind of pressure is mainly caused by three reasons. firstly, the government is enrolling more and more university students year by year. and the growth of the students' number has surpassed that of the need of the society. so, when so many students graduate at a time, the chance of finding jobs becomes tiny. secondly, today's university students, most of them are the “only-child”, who are more mentally frail. since they are indulged greatly at home and haven't been trained to do things on their own, once it is their turn to go out of the campus and find jobs by themselves and decide what kind of jobs to choose, they feel bewildered and don't know what to do. if their first try fails, they will be frustrated and think that it is really hard to find jobs.
thirdly, some university students are not qualified for good and challenging jobs. after entering the university, they don't study as hard as they did in high schools. they begin to sleep during the class or even be absent for classes. some are addicted to computer games or jin yong's novels, or step into the two-person-world too early. because these things have taken up so much of their time and energy, their study is neglected. after four years of university life, they haven't gained the knowledge those fairly good jobs or certain positions require.
this situation can be changed. the government may decrease the growth of enrolling university students gradually. and the university students can join in some extracurricular activities on campus to train their abilities of doing things independently and try to do some part-time jobs during weekends and vacations to gain more social experience. what's more, students should attach greatest importance to their study, not anything else. they should study harder and try to master the methods of how to put the knowledge they have learned into practice so as to be qualified for the jobs they desire.

Todd: So, Alex, you're still at university.
Alex: Yes, sir
Todd: So, what's a typical day at university like?
Alex: A typical day at my school, let's see, well I would usually get up, well last semester, I would get up around 8 or so. My first class would be at 9:10. It'd be an hour so around 10:10 I'd get out of class, you know, have lunch, and I was actually a part of the college radio station.
Todd: Oh, really.
Alex: So yeah, I'd hang out there, play some music, you know, joke around, play some pool, go to class. It wasn't too bad.
Todd: Yeah, where do you play pool?
Alex: Oh, well, any place that I can really. There's a pool table right next to my radio station at school so I usually play a lot there - a place called Mr. Pockets, too, where I live. They're pretty inexpensive so, I play there too, but I'm not very good. Like the pool table at my college was, it was a bar pool table so you have to pay money for it, 50 cents a game, and I must have put at least a hundred dollars in there and I'm not any better than when I started out, so I don't know.
Todd: That's OK you have other talents.
Alex: I guess.
Todd: What's the allure of pool? Why do college kids like to play pool?
Alex: Oh, I have, it's really a mystery, it's very ambiguous. I don't know. It's just the pool tables there and something with hitting balls with a stick into little holes, maybe, but it's a lot of fun. I don't know why I like it as much as I do but even though I'm not so good I like to play some pool.
(English Teaching at College)
some people say that english teaching at college in china has proved to be successful take college english test as an example, more than four million students have taken it and the number is still increasing year by year. this means that increasing numbers of people are aware of the necessity and importance of english learning. what is more, large numbers of students who are competent in english are making their contributions to the county in all walks of life. others, on the other hand, suggest that english teaching at college in china is a complete failure. they suggest that, on the whole, most graduates still can't communicate with native speakers properly in spoken english. besides, they are incompetent in both translation and writing.
i think great progress has been made in english teaching at college in china over the past 15 years. yet, there are still some problems. on the one hand, english teaching at college in china is still teacher centered, although the student centered approach has been advocated for years. the teacher dominates the class, leaving students little time to practice. on the other hand, english teaching at college in china is still test oriented. passing college english test has been regarded as a prerequisite for graduates to get jobs on the job market. so great emphasis is given on how to pass the tests rather than on how to develop the students' language skills. as a result, students do not have the language competence though most of them have passed college english test.
therefore, it is my strong feeling therefore that english teaching at colleges in china should go through some radical reform. priority should be given to the development of the four language skills rather than to develop the skills in passing the examination.

Todd: So, Alex, you're in university.
Alex: Yeah
Todd: So, um what kind of foods do you eat?
Alex: Well, since I go to college, I don't have a lot of money, so usually I go with the very inexpensive ramen, you know, breads, eggs. My favorite thing though is pancakes and bacon for breakfast. I have no idea, but I just like it a lot. I also like chili. I make chili actually, and it's very spicy, but I like chili and cheesecake. I eat a lot of cereal, a lot, a lot of cereal. I'm addicted really.
Todd: OK, like Sienfield?
Sienfield?
Alex: Yeah
Todd: So you say you eat ramen?
Alex: Yes.
Todd: OK, so how would you compare ramen in America and ramen in Japan?
Alex: Oh, ramen in Japan is definitely better. I mean the amount of ramen shops just in general is a whole lot more than you'll find in all of America I bet, just in Tokyo, but yeah, the ramen in Japan is definitely better than in America. Especially those humongous bowls of ramen with the meat and the eggs and stuff on top they give you. You're not going to find that, at least where I am in America, a lot, so I like that a lot.
Todd: And when you talk about ramen in the states, do you mean an actual ramen shop or like top ramen? Both actually. Ramen shops are very, at least where I am they're very, not, there's not a lot. So I usually when I want ramen, I have to buy the packaged, you know, Top Ramen, whatever.
Todd: Yeah, how much does it cost?
Alex: It depends where you do. The cheapest I found it was, they're having a sale, where I work actually, in a grocery store, was having a sale, like 50 cents a pack, so I loaded, and it was OK.
Todd: That's pretty cheap.
